TOPCon vs PERC in Hot Climates: Which Wins?

Compare TOPCon vs PERC solar panels for hot climates: temperature coefficient, efficiency and degradation, and how to choose for Gulf, Africa and South Asia.

Commercial rooftop bifacial solar modules

QUICK ANSWER

In hot climates, an N-type TOPCon panel usually holds its output better than a PERC panel. The reason is temperature coefficient: TOPCon cells shed roughly 0.29–0.32 %/°C of output, while PERC sheds about 0.34–0.40 %/°C. When cells sit at 45–60 °C on a sunny roof, that gap becomes a real wattage difference.

01 WHAT THE NUMBERS SAY

The spec sheet number that matters for heat is the temperature coefficient of Pmax. It tells you how much power a panel sheds as the cell gets hotter. The reference condition is 25 °C — most of a hot afternoon in the Gulf or the Sahel is well above that.

Let us do the arithmetic with a hypothetical 580 W panel — confirm the rated watts of the module you plan to buy, because the numbers below scale with it. At 25 °C both types are near their rated output. But at a realistic 55 °C cell temperature — 30 °C above reference — a -0.30%/°C panel loses 9% of power; a -0.35%/°C panel loses 10.5%. On a 580 W module that is roughly 52 W vs 61 W lost, before shading and soiling.

02 WHY TEMPERATURE COEFFICIENT MATTERS

A panel does not run at the air temperature you read in the weather app. Backsheet and cell temperature rise well above ambient under direct sun and poor ventilation. In hot regions this is one of the largest fixed losses a buyer can control — not by choosing a brighter brand, but by choosing a lower temperature coefficient.

So the choice is not really mono vs poly anymore. It is N-type vs P-type, because the cell structure is what drives the temperature coefficient. N-type TOPCon cells lose less power per degree and degrade more slowly, which is why they are the direction most high-efficiency modules have moved.

03 TOPCon VS PERC SIDE BY SIDE

Efficiency

Manufacturer datasheets for high-efficiency modules typically list TOPCon around 23% and mainstream PERC near 22% for the same form factor. A higher efficiency means more power from the same roof area.

Temperature coefficient of Pmax

TOPCon: about -0.29 to -0.32 %/°C. PERC: about -0.34 to -0.40 %/°C. Lower is better here.

Degradation

N-type cells typically show lower first-year and annual degradation than P-type. The exact number comes from the module warranty — confirm it in the datasheet.

Which to pick

For markets that push cell temperature past 50 °C for months — the Gulf, North Africa, the Sahel, South Asia — the lower coefficient of TOPCon usually pays back. In a cooler temperate climate, a well-made PERC module can still be the sensible value choice, because the heat penalty is much smaller.

04 WHICH MARKET SHOULD CHOOSE WHAT

If you buy for Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Kuwait, northern Nigeria, Sudan or inland India, lean N-type TOPCon and watch the coefficient. If you buy for northern Europe or a mild coastal zone, PERC at the right price still has a place — and you can spend the budget on better mounting instead.

That is the honest split, and it is why one blanket recommendation is wrong.

05 HOW TO BUY FROM A CUSTOM MANUFACTURER

SunCrank builds custom solar modules from 7 W to 730 W with OEM/ODM support. If you need panels matched to a specific device, voltage or climate, you can ask for custom sizes and connectors.

When you request a quote for a hot-climate project, ask the supplier for three things: the exact temperature coefficient of Pmax for the module you are buying, the N-type or P-type cell structure, and the degradation warranty. Confirm those numbers against the datasheet, not the sales pitch.

FAQ

Is TOPCon always better than PERC?

No. TOPCon usually wins in hot climates because of a lower temperature coefficient and better degradation. In mild climates a well-priced PERC module can still be the better value. The deciding factor is your operating cell temperature, not the brand.

What does a lower temperature coefficient mean in practice?

It means less power lost as the panel heats up. On a hypothetical 580 W panel at 55 °C, going from -0.35 to -0.30 %/°C recovers roughly 9 W. Over a thousand panels that is a meaningful amount of energy every hot afternoon.

Which market should choose N-type TOPCon?

Markets where cell temperature sits above 50 °C for long stretches: the Gulf, North Africa, the Sahel and inland South Asia. These regions get the most benefit from the lower coefficient and lower degradation.
